Tough Times

My great, great grandfather's Bible that he had with him while serving in the navy during America's Civil War.

As you may recall, when Shackleton abandoned Endurance, he carefully sliced out a couple of chapters from the Book of Job that centered on this verse:

Job 38 KJV

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

In 2007, I asked Tim Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian to do a series on the Book of Job. He groaned. We had been discussing what in Tim's words, "Shackleton had been meditating on" in the face of a tremendous challenge. I was thrilled about a year later, when Tim did a wonderful series on Job - A Path Through Suffering.
