Author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Julia Ward Howe and her husband, Samuel Howe, were very active in the Abolition Movement. In November 1861, as they neared Washington, DC. Julia Ward Howe noticed the Union Army camps, "lying like a steel girdle about Washington to protect it." A few days later she wrote, "I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps..."
