In the opinion of Shackleton's team, he was "the greatest leader who ever came on God's earth, bar none."
Photographer Frank Hurley said, "I always found him rising to his best when things were at their blackest."
Physicist Reginald James said, "I do not think there is any doubt that we all owe our lives to his leadership."
Sixty years after the expedition, First Officer Lionel Greenstreet, was asked how they managed to survive. He answered in one word, "Shackleton."
We see in Shackleton the qualities of leadership that we all want to have:
Courage in the face of adversity.
Determination against all odds.
Grace under pressure.
Working well with others.
And, above all, a flat-out refusal to give up hope - no matter what the circumstances.
