Leading through a crisis

Yesterday's horrific event and the anniversary of September 11th bring to mind a story and executive told me twenty years ago.

He was running a meeting for a large group on a high floor at the WFC (World Financial Center - I believe that's the correct name) across the street from the World Trade Center.

He said to the group in front of him, the elevators are going to be overwhelmed, we're all going to get separated. So when I get downstairs, I'm going to head for the ferry (that would take him home to New Jersey.)

They did all get separated but they all met up on the line for the ferry and eventually caught the last ferry back to New Jersey.

Like Shackleton, he led by example - he stayed calm in the face of a tremendous crisis. He communicated effectively - he offered a solution and explained clearly and concisely his plan. He kept up morale by including everyone in his plan and maintained a positive attitude.

Great leadership in action.
