Madeline Sophie Barat, Founder of an Order
& Newton College of the Sacred Heart
Like Jane Austen and Julia Ward Howe, Madeline Sophie Barat (1779 - 1865) was strongly encouraged by the men in her life.
In 1800, 20-year-old Madeline Sophie founded the Society of the Sacred Heart to educate girls from poor and well-to-do families. Her life's work lives on in 41 countries.
This story focuses on the Order's early years and on Newton College of the Sacred Heart which was absorbed into Boston College in 1975. Newton's campus is now the Boston College Law School.
