Shackleton on his second-in-command

Shackleton described Frank Wild, his trusted second-in-command, as his "second self." He was quoting Cicero, "A friend is a second self."

Shackleton and Wild first met on Robert Scott's Discovery expedition. Wild served with Shackleton on Nimrod, Endurance and Quest.

Stranded on Elephant Island with little hope of rescue, Wild began every day with the optimistic order, "Lash up and stow, boys. The Boss may come today."
